Personal Highlights

Moonbase Theta, Out: Bonus 4 – Patrick. It’s what Moonbase Theta, Out does best, as the last post-season bonus episode is a highly emotional one, providing some of the most heartbreaking moments of the entire series so far. It’s the immediate aftermath of the events of season 3 for the folks in the Freehold on Earth, as the web that had been weaving over the course of the season finally closes in on them. It’s an episode of endings, but also some new beginnings, as new seeds are sown for the show’s final season.

Lost Terminal: 5.4 – I saw a ghost. There’s an interesting jump forward in time, which I wasn’t expecting after the previous episode; the ship is now quite some distance from their starting point in the Arctic, heading southward in its journey towards the Antarctic. The crew see a strange sight that Seth can’t quite make sense of, and this gives the audience a fair bit to think about, as we don’t know the full story behind it. There are more glimpses of life on the ship through Seth’s narration, and some heartwarming moments demonstrating how he and Maddie have been accepted as part of it; but there are also moments describing how Seth is understandably still trying to make sense of the humans around him, not fully understanding how their minds work. It may be a month in, but he’s still getting used to life at sea, away from what he’d become used to, and there’s more than just a pang of regret at having left the lighthouse behind.

Y2K: Episode 7 – Tammi – Age 19 – Paris – July 2018. The youngest character we’ve seen in season two so far, and it’s interesting to have a very different perspective from the episodes which have featured the characters we originally met in the year 2000; and to also have some background on how Tammi ended up in Birmingham in 2020. Friendship is naturally such a big part of the show in general, and here we have a depiction of a close friend group which we didn’t see in season one, with Tammi’s group of friends from high school. There are some definite parallels with Jess and Kat’s long distance friendship in season one, as life’s next step for this group means going their separate ways for university.

Rapture 518: Episode 10 – Transposition of the Great Arteries. I was delighted when I saw finale of the first season of Rapture 518 in my podcatcher, after the show had been on hiatus. It’s a very different episode to the rest of the season, as Sarah has finally escaped Rapture. This finale answers a lot of questions that had come up during the course of the season, in a revelation that slowly unfolds as Sarah recalls how she escaped her apartment building. The season ends on a cliffhanger, with a big question that sets up the next season.

Returns

I was so excited to see the return of Midst for its second season. As in the very first episode of the series, the one that teased the moon falling out of the sky, this season opener begins with another flashforward, another glimpse of a future that is yet to come. Then we’re back to the present, a few hours after the events of the season one finale, with all hell breaking loose in Midst. It’s such a tense episode, as the viewpoint shifts to one particular character’s chance at escape – or purpose. I loved how the episode ended, and I can’t wait to hear what happens next!

Trailers and Prologues

Crossover time! This week both The Amelia Project and Forgive Me! released update/trailer episodes for their upcoming crossover miniseries, and I’m very excited! Set before The Amelia Project’s first season, the trailer features the Interviewer leaving a message for Forgive Me!’s Father Ben, as the Amelia crew are coming to see him for confession, and they’re in quite a hurry. The miniseries is due to begin on August 8th.

Descendants released another prologue episode as part of the crowdfunding campaign for the show – season one is now fully funded! This episode gives us the answer to the question from the previous prologue – where is the Adamantine? The characters have no idea how much danger they’re in, unlike the audience, until some kind of discovery is made at the end of the episode. What exactly, the audience doesn’t know, but we can definitely understand that it sets up the plot of the first season of Descendants.
